Since When Uranium

As a source of nuclear energy, Uranium has only been known to the public since August 1945, with the release on Japan of two US atomic bombs, the only ones ever to be used in wartime. But he had been familiar to specialists for a century and a half already.

Eugène Melchior Péligot, the French chemist who discovered uranium in 1841. in the 19th century.

In 1789, in fact, the German chemist and pharmacist Martin Heinrich Klaproth identified uranium by baking pitchblende. Later, in 1841, the French Eugène Melchior Péligot, having observed that uranium was not a simple body but a metal oxide, was led to the discovery of uranium.

For a long time this will only remain a by-product of the extraction of radium salts and, during the nineteenth century, will play the role of chemical agent in artistic or industrial activities ranging from ceramics and mirror making to metallurgy.
