Since When Apricot

It was long believed that he was from China, where its culture dates back more than four millennia. In fact, it is native to the mountains of eastern Iran, Turkestan, and northwestern India, where it is still found in the wild. Even today it is the only fruit tree cultivated by the Hunza, these mountain people who, since times without memory, occupy some very high valleys of Karakorum, on the borders of India and Pakistan.

Known for their good health in spite of a harsh climate, and for their extraordinarily numerous centenarians, the Hounza explain their longevity by a large consumption of apricots, both fresh and dried, throughout the year. It was only at the beginning of our era that the apricot tree has reached the shores of the Mediterranean. The Crusaders found him in Palestine.
